This 21-day pilgrimage to India takes us to the Institute’s campus on the banks of the Ganga (Ganges River) in Allahabad for the Kumbha Mela and to Khajuraho, a stronghold of tantric practice. Both campuses are ideal for starting, deepening, or concluding one’s personal practice, and for experiencing the essence of India, pilgrimage, and personal transformation. For your convenience, there are three tour options:

  • Option 1:  January 18—February 7
  • Option 2:  February 1—February 21
  • Option 3:  February 15—March 7

Each of these tour options will have the same itinerary of activities. Here is a general overview of the pilgrimage:

Day 1 Group departures from New York and other cities.
Day 2-3 Group arrivals in Delhi. Board motor coaches for Agra. Afternoon tour of Taj Mahal.
Day 4-11 Allahabad: Stay at the Himalayan Institute’s private 30-acre campus on the bank of the river Ganga for study, spiritual practice, and visits to the Kumbha Mela, the Sangam, and other local sites, and meeting prominent swamis.
Day 12-18 Khajuraho: The group will stay at the Institute’s new 30-acre campus, just 7 miles from the main temple complex. We’ll visit Khajuraho’s 22-temple complex, the Temple of Sixty-Four Yoginis, and the Eastern Temple complex, take part in the consecration of the tantric shrine at the Institute’s campus, and visit nearby villages.
Day 19 Depart for Delhi with overnight stay at Agra.
Day 20 Depart Agra for Delhi. Lunch in Delhi with afternoon for free shopping. Gala farewell dinner before departing for airport and international flights for home.
Day 21 Arrive in New York.

A Sample Day in Allahabad and Khajuraho

 5:30 a.m. Greet the rising sun with a warming cup of homemade chai
 6:00 a.m. The sweet melody of morning prayers of the Himalayan Tradition permeates the crisp morning air of the Sacred Grove on the bank of the Ganga
 6:30 a.m. Allahabad: After morning prayers in the Sacred Grove, nourish the source of life within and without at the havan kund. The recitation of mantras invokes the deities, followed by our offerings of special herbs to the fire. Khajuraho: After morning prayers, ceremonies for consecration of the Sri Vidya Shrine and spiritual practice continue.
 8:30 a.m. Enjoy a nourishing breakfast
10:00 a.m. A memorable group event or activity, an inspiring lecture, study, or practice round out your morning
12:30 p.m. A hearty lunch to delight your taste buds
 2:00 p.m. Free time to enjoy the beauty and serenity of the Institute grounds with your fellow seekers: engage in thoughtful discourse, shop the stalls of our HI Bazaar, stroll the paths, catch-up on your reading, practice your Sanskrit, sketch pictures, write poetry or a short story, or simply relax in the idyllic surroundings
 4:00 p.m. Savor the British tradition embraced by India as you refresh yourself with
afternoon homemade Chai and a tasty snack
 4:30 p.m. Limber the body, mind, and spirit, and stoke your inner fire with a scheduled asana class or practicum
 6:30 p.m. Supper brings us together again to share your experiences of the day
 8:00 p.m. Evening Event or Kirtan (chanting)
 9:30 p.m. Gather in the Sacred Grove for evening prayers (verses from Saundaryalahari)
10:00 p.m. Lights out for restful slumber and silence hours to soothe your inner being
until breakfast (8:30 a.m.)
